- ToyGuru (Pre- Q&A)
The 2009 rollout will include 1 new figure every month released on the 15th or the Monday after a holiday or weekend. They’re $20 each only on mattycollector. Some months may have a bonus figure. This solely depends on sales. We basically look at sales and bring that to our management and say “Hey look, we sold out of skeletor in 2 weeks, maybe we should think of putting 2 figures sometimes.” We’re not guaranteeing this but we’re working on it. The bonus figure will be repaints and re-releases. Now by repaints I’m not talking about “Techno-Boogey Skeletor.” We’re talking about logical repaints. Figures that um, Faker would probably be a good example...things like that. Characters that don’t have any tooling, but there’s a clear way to do the figure again in a different deco, maybe in the mini comic look, maybe in the 2002 deco. We would never ask you to buy a figure that we weren’t proud of. There will be a SDCC exclusive in addition to the July figure and it will be available online after the convention. Although there might be something slightly special about the one at comic con. We haven’t quite nailed that down. We will reveal the SDCC figure somewhere around April, probably on our Facebook page.
(Introduces Upcoming MOTUC Figures)
TG- MAA will come with both heads. He is MAA for a reason. He is fully armed and ready. He comes with a dagger, a blaster and his traditional staff, which all click into the back of his armor and we’re actually looking out for throwing in a bonus accessory which is going to be a bit of a mystery. But I think you’re going to be very excited to see what the extra accessory is. Teela is not his accessory. Following MAA, we’re looking at classics Tri-Klops who will also come with a super secret bonus accessory. You’ll notice he is done based on the original package art much like MAA and the Horsemen did a fantastic job. Now we’ve already gone though August. We will actually have another sneak peak. We just got a figure in from the Horsemen literally an hour ago. The figure is not painted yet and it’s not the figure after Tri-Klops. It’s from a little later in the year but we’ll have it in the booth a little later today. This figure didn’t quite make the presentation but you’ll definitely want to stop back to check out this figure.
Q&A (only MOTUC related questions transcribed)
Q1: Question was asked about subscription service on mattycollector. A: TG- Good question-the answer is yes. We are improving on that at the moment, specifically we’re going to test run it with MOTUC. Probably going to launch what we call the subscription program in hopefully the next 2 months. We’re still working out the details, but what we’d ideally like to do is offer 2 options. One is that we would stash the figures and you would receive – what we would do is when the program launches, in whatever month we started, let’s say April. April through December figures for 2009. You’d either have the option to A- having them all shipped to you on December 15th, or B- having them shipped to you one figure at a time each month. That would be 2 different shipping options. You would save on shipping if we waited. We’re still working out the details. We’ve talked to Digital River who is out Distribution partner. We are working on this actively. We meet with them almost everyday. We just don’t have all the details but yes. If it works well with Masters and there’s enough interest, plus this is going to help us understand what the baseline is. If we have, let’s say 10,000 people signed up for this, that means we have guaranteed sales and we know we’re going to sell that many. We’re really excited to do this.
Q2: Question was asked about the possibility of a Castle Grayskull like playset/display case, not the actual castle, but perhaps pieces for display. A: TG- Definitely something we’re looking at. The line is doing really well. Skeletor sold out faster than we expected. Ideally, the plan was that the figures would be on sale for 1 month and they would sell out about the time the next one was on sale. We’re adjusting quotas but yeah if the line continues with the success – the better they sell, the bigger things we can do.
Q3: Has there been any thought to polling on matty for character selection in the future? A: TG (answers yes about some polling for DC figures)---eventually we’d like to do the same thing with Masters. We’d be able to have fans select figures. We are looking into that.
Q4: Will we see any mini comics? A: TG- We are looking into it. It really comes down to a bottom line. Would you rather have an extra head for Mer-Man or a mini comic? Who wants an extra head? Who wants the mini comic instead? (majority of audience raises hands for extra heads) There’s your answer. We’re going to do the extra heads. We love the mini comics. We’re actually looking at ways to even reprint them as a graphic novel and offer them on matty or even in bookstores. We are working on this, but yeah as far as – it’s expensive to do. You know printing, talent - even if it’s digital. We’d rather put all the money into the figures, unless you guys feel otherwise. Would you rather us take the money away from the figures and put it to minis? (audience boos) Alright that’s your answer to the question.
Q5: Question was asked about international shipping and distribution centers. A: TG- We do ship internationally and we are looking at different countries for sales that are higher. If we do see peaks in certain areas, like we know there’s a very large German fan base for the Masters. We’re looking at possibly opening up a distribution center. Right now we’re actually working with some of the German fan sites and shipping them – we actually shipped them I think 200 figures so that they could distribute it in Germany. If the trend does continue and we do see that, yes, we’d like to open up some European distribution.
Q6: Question asked was basically about how to obtain sold out figures. A: TG- Like what I said earlier about the repaints – that would also apply to reissues. If we reissue a figure, what we would do – we wouldn’t make any major tweaks – if anything it would be actually fixing the shoulders. I don’t know if people noticed the shoulders were actually reversed on He-Man & King Grayskull, which was such a minute detail, not a present one. It was actually the 4H that noticed that when we sent them the sample. The change would be in the packaging, but it would be minor. It would be something like you write on the side “2nd release.” So that would be an example of a second figure. He-man, Skeletor, MAA – the big guys – we’re going to try and get them second and third releases. They’ll probably be spaced apart between 8 and 12 months. So if we did do He-Man you probably wouldn’t see him again until, between October and January. We probably will re-release King Grayskull on the single card, but with him because he was special with SDCC, again he won’t be in the big packaging, he’ll be in a regular card, so we’ll probably make some deco changes. We’ll give him a different color cape, possibly some battle damage, different accessories, but yeah we will eventually re-release King Grayskull slightly altered.
Q7: Question was asked about chase figures. A: TG- The regular figures online, definitely no. We polled fans. We actually asked them in San Diego and we got booed off the stage. I should ask that again -do you guys want chase figures? (audience - NOOOOO!) That’s what I thought. But the convention figures, like what we have planned for SD – there may be – we may do a chase figure in that case.
Q8: One of the things that made the original Masters figures so memorable were some of the unique features. What are the chances we might get a smelly Stinkor or a fuzzy Moss Man? A: TG- Fuzzy Moss Man, probably yes. Yeah I don’t think we could do Moss Man if he wasn’t flocked. 4H Eric Mayse- We even talked today about the possibility of trying to get the pine scent in Moss Man too. TG- We have the lined planned out a couple years in advance so we’re definitely not shooting blanks out there. It’s not set in stone. We’re obviously going to listen to fan feedback. We know who the core characters are, the secondary, the POP characters, the NA, so we have a really good idea of what people are going to be very happy with.
Q9: Question was asked about a possible Direct to DVD animated movie. A: TG- It’s definitely something we’re looking at. Right now we’re really concentrating – I’m sure you’ve heard that announcement that we’ve just signed a director for the feature film. We’re looking into it. It’s on the radar but nothing to announce quite yet.
Q10: When will Battle Cat be available? A: TG- I will definitely be happy to officially announce we will get to Battle Cat – absolutely. He probably won’t be available until 2010, but we’re definitely looking into a way to do him.
Q11: Question was asked about the release of female characters. A: TG- Depending on the month’s scheduled release there may be more than one female, but definitely – if it doesn’t make it this year - the second female will be early 2010 as in January or February. There will be even more females in 2010.
Q12: Any chances of getting Panthor? A: TG- (Jokingly) Well if we do Battle Cat we will probably do Panthor – Yes. Part of the whole reason we were able to do this line – yes – we can share tooling. One of the reasons we’re excited we can do Battle Cat is because we know at the end of the day - we know we have to make money off this line and we know we can issue Battle Cat twice in green deco and than again flocked in purple deco for the obvious Panthor repaint. So yes, we’ll get to Panthor.
Q13: Question was asked about the possibility of getting Shadow Weaver and why Fisto was called Battle Fist for the 2002 series. A: TG- Unfortunately the answer is no. At this point we do not have access to the Filmation only characters. Obviously things could change. If one day we do, the moment the light’s green and they say yes you can do Filmation – oh yeah Shadow Weaver, right away, totally! At the moment those characters are off limits. The thing with Battle Fist – the reason he wasn’t Fisto is because at the time he was released in 2002, there happened to be a green tentacled Jedi that shared that name and it was copyrighted first and unfortunately that’s why it happened. We’re going to see when we get to that character if we can go back to Fisto. If we can’t, maybe Fisto can be his nickname in the bio or something like that. Unfortunately Filmation is off – but for now. We’d love to get to them – believe me. I want a Shadow Weaver just as much as you do.
Q14: Do we expect to see any Build-a-Figures like Modulok? A: TG- Probably a better chance of Tytus & Megator than Modulok as we might be able to use some of the tooling from the DC Universe to do some of the larger – Tytus & Megator – we are looking into that. Modulok could be a little harder because he’s 100% new tooling. I’ll give you just kind of a glimpse of long term. When the movie does come out – if it comes out – it should come out – if the line does go to retail the plan is that we would probably release some of the figures in the line at retail definitely scaled down. A character like Mer-Man would only have one head so that way when you buy him on matty you feel like you got a collector version. The one at retail would have one accessory and one head – and that’s the time – we have these figures at retail – we’d be able to do more of those 100% sculpt characters like Modulok, Ram Man etc. Those kind of characters are probably going to take retail support before we can get to that and that’s going to take a movie being out.
Q15: Question was asked about a possible weapons pack. A: TG- It’s definitely a possibility and we have looked at it. It’s more likely it would be existing accessories, possibly even repainted. We love the old Masters pack, you know with the blue sword, Beast Man’s orange – one of the things about the toy industry is to tool a new weapon it costs just as much as tooling a part of a figure, so the tooling of a weapons pack would be just as much as tooling a Hordak. If we did the weapons pack it would be more likely to be repainted weapons, but yeah it could be a possibility.
Q16: Question was brought up about exchanging a broken figure if the figure is already sold out. A: TG- If the toys breaks after it’s sold out, we do keep about 3% of the run back for things like that so you could exchange it by contacting customer service.
Q17: Any chance of seeing Commemorative MOTU again? A: TG- Not at this time. Again, with a movie you might see something like that, but right now we want to put all our efforts into this kick butt line.
Q18: Question was asked about protective shipper boxes for MOTUC. A: TG- Yes, much like the – you can see that currently on the Starfire/Adam Strange pack that we got an outside shipping box. I think MAA will probably be the first figure that we add this on. Yes, we are looking at adding a protective shipper box over the blister.
Q19: Will She-ra, NA, the Horde and Snakemen have packaging or titling differences? A: TG- They will have the same packaging, but Horde, Snakemen & POP will have stickers on the blister identifying them as the specific team. So you’ll see that Horde logo will be kind of an updated version of the 80’s Horde logo.
Q20: Will Zodac come with his staff or just the gun? A: TG- This version of Zodac will come with his gun. |

- Q21: This is a question for the 4H. Out of the MOTU characters you’ve sculpted so far which one is your favorite and why?
A: 4H Eric Treadaway- For me, the classic 8 back Mer-Man. I’m one of the people who’s always been obsessed with that image on the back of the package and was completely disappointed as a kid when that head wasn’t on it. I was never that thrilled with the way the production came out on the 2000 version, so I was very happy to walk in and see the production piece on it looking good. 4H Eric Mayse- For me, it was originally Stratos cause he always reminded me of flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz and I always loved that but after we got finished with Hordak, he has become my favorite. The translation of the character into this style either from the 2000 version or the original Hordak, I mean to me, I hate to say it, it might be blasphemy, but I think this tops them both.
Q22: What figures are you guys looking forward to making? A: 4H Eric Mayse- Trying to get a little inside info out of us. I’ve always been a huge fan of Tytus and Megator. Since we first started with MOTU and working with Mattel we’ve wanted to do them and hopefully this line will give us a chance to do these guys. 4H Eric Treadaway- Trap Jaw.
Q23: With King Randor, is he going to be coming with the blue suit or are you going to be doing the 2002 one? A: TG- We’ll find out when we get to it. It’s more likely – the general rule is it’s going to be the original 80’s figure but for the characters that were also in the 2000 series, they’ll be some hints of that too. 4H- Eric Mayse- The general philosophy is, when approaching these characters – it’s called MOTUC so we approach it from more of the classic sense of the character first and than later on if there’s a way to do repaints or an update of the character, then we’ll change it for the 2002 – in the case of Mer-Man we got both the classic head and either the head on the back of the package or the more 2002 version. More than likely, if we ever get around to doing King Randor – I don’t know where you came up with that crazy idea, but it’ll probably be more classic style to begin with, than later on we’ll touch it up.
Q24: Question was asked about the possibility of a Fearless Photog figure. A: TG- Good question. I actually have the news article of that in a file in a desk. I’ve actually got the entire history of Masters in a big box. It’s tough because of the rights of that. One of the nice things is that there was actually a character in the NA called Optikk who kind of actually was an homage to that character so it’s more likely we would do Optikk before we do Photog. It’s possible down the line, but the rights on that one are a little fuzzy.
Q25: The question was about the possibility of figures being produced that never made it past the initial design or prototype phase. A: 4H Eric Treadaway- It would probably be a case by case. If it were He-Ro, there was a prototype so there’s a lot more of a concrete template to go by. I think those are the situations for us where we will have a little fun with them design wise and a little bit more leeway. There’s Mark Taylor or the stuff that was in Tomarts. It would definitely be cool to go back and see some of those concepts realized, whatever it is, 30 years later. 4H Eric Mayse- Yeah hopefully this time it’ll be popular enough where we will be able to dig very very deep into the MOTU mythos. |

| Me encanta la idea de la posibilidad de que hagan a Titus y Megator, eso estaria demasiado volado, ojala los hagan. Y bueno tendremos que esperar hasta abril para conocer el proximo exclusivo, que cool. |
